Sacred Bear Butte, six miles north of Sturgis, South Dakota by David Mattson I grew up in the Black Hills of western South Dakota on a small ranch roughly 30 miles away from the town of Sturgis and between 100 and 200 miles away from the sprawling Pine Ridge and Cheyenne River Indian Reservations. David Taylor, who homesteaded our ranch, created a sinuous inholding within the newly created Black Hills Forest Reserve, laid out to capture as much bottomland pasture as possible
